Un demi-si\u00e8cle plus tard, ce n\u2019\u00e9tait certes pas l\u2019harmonie des sph\u00e8res qui r\u00e9sonnait \u00e0 Budapest, mais le vacarme des chars russes. Un jeune compositeur, Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti, choisit alors de s\u2019exiler \u00e0 Vienne, l\u00e0 justement o\u00f9 Mahler fit l\u2019essentiel de sa carri\u00e8re. Choix personnel, mais \u00e9galement choix artistique.<br \/>\nUn voile s\u2019\u00e9tait en effet referm\u00e9 sur la Hongrie. Avant l\u2019av\u00e8nement du sinistre M\u00e1ty\u00e1s R\u00e1kosi, Ligeti avait eu le temps de v\u00e9n\u00e9rer la musique de Bart\u00f3k ; apr\u00e8s 1949, seules des bribes d\u2019Occident parvenaient encore jusqu\u2019aux v\u00e9n\u00e9rables salles de l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie de musique de Budapest, \u00eelot de r\u00e9sistance bien illusoire o\u00f9 quelques courageux passaient des partitions de Stravinsky sous le manteau. Comment d\u00e9crire alors l\u2019\u00e9motion qui saisit le jeune compositeur lorsqu\u2019il \u00e9couta en cachette, seul dans les locaux de la Radio nationale, en 1956, la cr\u00e9ation du <em>Gesang der J\u00fcnglinge<\/em> de Stockhausen ?<br \/>\nC\u2019est aupr\u00e8s du compositeur allemand, notamment, qu\u2019il s\u2019abreuva des avant-gardes europ\u00e9ennes, avant de s\u2019installer \u00e0 Vienne. Dans la capitale autrichienne, devenue le p\u00f4le libre de la Mitteleuropa, il rejoignait \u00e0 travers les d\u00e9cennies Gustav Mahler, un autre d\u00e9racin\u00e9 : originaire de Boh\u00eame, \u00e0 la fronti\u00e8re de la Moravie, Mahler \u00e9tait juif et fut contraint de se convertir au catholicisme afin que s\u2019ouvrent \u00e0 lui les postes officiels ; quant \u00e0 Ligeti, originaire de Transylvanie (province que s\u2019arrachaient Hongrie et Roumanie), une grande partie de sa famille avait p\u00e9ri dans les camps nazis.<br \/>\nCes biographies douloureuses, parsem\u00e9es de pers\u00e9cutions et de deuils, ont forg\u00e9 deux personnalit\u00e9s dont la propension \u00e0 l\u2019absurde prend parfois des allures macabres. Dans le scherzo de la <em>Quatri\u00e8me Symphonie<\/em> de Mahler, un violon d\u00e9saccord\u00e9 figure une Faucheuse grotesque, digne des danses des morts m\u00e9di\u00e9vales (\u00ab\u00a0La mort conduit le bal\u00a0\u00bb, commente la partition). Ligeti lui r\u00e9pond par son unique op\u00e9ra, Le <em>Grand Macabre<\/em>, fresque loufoque dans laquelle le sinistre Nekrotzar \u00e9choue piteusement \u00e0 provoquer l\u2019Apocalypse qu\u2019il a promise. Pourtant, tout semble s\u00e9parer les deux compositeurs. Mahler marie le lied, domaine de l\u2019intime, et les vastes espaces de la symphonie. Ligeti, quant \u00e0 lui, lorgnerait plut\u00f4t vers l\u2019infiniment petit. Fascin\u00e9 par la g\u00e9om\u00e9trie fractale de Beno\u00eet Mandelbrot, il a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 une technique nouvelle, les micropolyphonies : des nappes sonores faites de la superposition d\u2019\u00e9l\u00e9ments infimes et innombrables, qui se transforment imperceptiblement. La lente et perp\u00e9tuelle m\u00e9tamorphose de ces masses ressemble \u00e0 celle des nuages, mis \u00e0 l\u2019honneur, conjointement aux mouvements d\u2019horloge (un autre engouement de Ligeti), dans <em>Clocks and Clouds<\/em>. Cette mani\u00e8re de cr\u00e9er des perspectives sonores et temporelles, Ligeti les a remarqu\u00e9es et lou\u00e9es chez Mahler.
