Sophie Cherrier

Flute

Sophie Cherrier studied at the Conservatoire of Nancy and then at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where she graduated with highest honors in flute and chamber music. She joined the Ensemble intercontemporain in 1979. She has performed in the premieres of numerous works, including Mémoriale by Pierre Boulez, Esprit rude/Esprit doux by Elliott Carter and Chu Ky V by Ton-Thât Tiêt.

She has recorded several works by Pierre Boulez, including …explosante fixe… for Deutsche Grammophon and Mémoriale and the Sonatine pour flûte et piano for Erato. She has also recorded the Sequenza I by Luciano Berio (Deutsche Grammophon), Imaginary Sky-lines for flute and harp by Ivan Fedele (Adès), Jupiter and La Partition du ciel et de l’Enfer by Philippe Manoury (for the collection “Compositeurs d’aujourd’hui”), Dialog/no Dialog by Pierre Jodlowski (Sirènes) and recently Beyond (a system of passing) by Matthias Pinscher (Alpha).

She has performed with the Hallé Orchestra of Manchester, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin.

Passionate about teaching, Sophie Cherrier has taught at the Conservatoire de Paris since 1998, giving numerous masterclasses in France and abroad. In 2011, she was appointed Chevalière des Arts et des Lettres.
